Time Machine is not a method for transferring data to a new machine, it's for backups. You can't restore a complete older TM backup onto a new machine, since [you can't install a system older than what the machine shipped with|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186]. You could restore just selected files, but there are far easier methods.
Just use [FireWire target mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661], if possible, to connect the old machine to the new one and then use Migration Assistant to copy your stuff over. I would recommend reinstalling any third-party apps from scratch rather than relying on Migration Assistant to copy everything properly, though.

Using Migration Assistant Mac
